Benefits

The palms contain blood vessels called arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs), which move large volumes of blood close to the skin. Cooling there may help lower core body temperature during a session, which is why athletes use it between sets, sprints and timeouts instead of waiting until training is over.

Recent research cites two randomized crossover studies of palm cooling. In one, 22 elite male soccer players aged 17 to 19 reported feeling cooler and showed better sprint velocity. In the other, 21 collegiate athletes completed more reps and total work volume on overhead presses to failure. Both were small samples of trained athletes, and Therabody partnered on this research.
